I lived at home to save money and attended a local college.
Parents sold the Bakery and I worked various jobs.
A Sea Scout friend told me about the University
of West Florida and it's sailing team.
I transferred to UWF, started racing and managed the University's sailing facilities.
I had a blast, after all it was 1970 and the age of Aquarius.
I raced Flying Juniors, 420's, Flying Scots and did a lot of offshore work.
I won many trophy's and one district championship.
Racing Flying Juniors at UWF. The
FJ is one of the designated classes for college racing.
Not only did I race, but I also
held various offices both within the sailing club and on a regional level.
Here I am running a regatta.
I improved my racing skills and
won a lots of trophy's. College races were short courses with lots of starts.
Sitting between races my crew and
I would have to wait for our boat. There are two teams per college and each
boat would rotate.
I also campaigned a 19 foot Flying
Scot. This is a very popular racing boat in the Gulf coast area. The Gulf
Yachting Association uses the FS as their club boats.
I won district championships at
Pensacola in 1971. We were fast and fearless in heavy airs.
UWF's sailing club was popular and
open to the student body. The Varsity sailing team won many trophies for
the University.
Graduation from UWF in 1972.
My major is Computer Science, minor in marine biology and my love continued
to be sailing.
